Denture maintenance laboratory
Keep suitable dentures working as clinical needs change
When an existing removable appliance remains appropriate to maintain, Smart Smile supports your practice with prescription-led relines and additions, considered workmanship and clear case communication.
For dental clinics, dentists and practice teams.

Suitability comes first
The appliance, material, design and clinical situation are considered before a maintenance pathway proceeds.
Guided by your prescription
Your records and instructions define the requested change and the relationships that need to be preserved.
A conversation when it matters
If the appliance or supplied information raises a question, we contact the clinic before the next stage.
Two maintenance pathways
Choose the service that matches your clinical plan
Relines and additions answer different needs. In each case, the existing denture must first be assessed as a suitable foundation for the prescribed laboratory work.
Denture relines
Where prescribed, a laboratory reline renews the tissue-fitting surface of an existing removable denture while retaining the established teeth and much of the appliance.
Useful when tissue adaptation has changed and the remaining denture is clinically appropriate to retain.
Denture additions
For a suitable existing appliance, prescribed teeth or components can be added so the denture reflects a changed clinical situation while respecting its current material and design.
Useful when a planned extraction or another clinical change calls for a carefully integrated addition.

A sound starting point
Maintenance begins with the whole appliance
Before laboratory work proceeds, the requested change needs to make sense for the denture that will carry it. Clear records help us understand what your practice wants to preserve, alter and return for clinical assessment.
- Appliance material, integrity and general condition
- Tooth wear, position, occlusion and available restorative space
- Framework, clasps, borders and the area of the proposed work
- Clinical impressions, models, bite records and design instructions as required
- Case timing and any appointment-dependent return arrangements
Planning note: Record requirements vary with the appliance and the prescribed work. Contact Smart Smile before the appointment if you would like to confirm what to send.
Finding the practical pathway
Start with the change you need to address
The fitting surface has changed
A reline may be considered when tissue adaptation has changed but the denture teeth, base and established relationships remain suitable for continued clinical use.
The clinical requirement has changed
An addition may be considered when a suitable denture needs a prescribed tooth or component integrated into its existing design.
The appliance needs another approach
Significant wear, fracture, unsuitable design or compromised relationships may mean repair, rebasing or replacement should be considered clinically instead of the requested maintenance.
Clinic-to-laboratory workflow
A clear route from assessment to return
01
Assess and prescribe
Your practice evaluates the denture and clinical situation, then identifies the intended maintenance pathway and captures the required records.
02
Review and complete
We check the appliance against the supplied prescription, clarify questions where needed, and carry out the agreed laboratory work.
03
Receive and assess clinically
Your clinic receives the maintained denture for evaluation, adjustment where required and the appropriate patient guidance.
Common clinic questions
Planning a denture maintenance case
How do I choose between a reline and an addition?
A reline changes the tissue-fitting surface; an addition incorporates a prescribed tooth or component. Your clinical assessment determines the need, while the appliance condition and material influence whether the proposed laboratory work is practical.
Can every existing denture be maintained?
No. Excessive wear, fracture, unsuitable design, limited space or compromised relationships may make another clinical pathway more appropriate. Send clear appliance details or contact us before scheduling the case if suitability is uncertain.
What records should accompany the denture?
Requirements depend on the maintenance type and appliance. Include a complete prescription, the cleaned and disinfected denture, and the relevant impression, model, bite, design and timing information requested for the case.
How should we plan the appointment timing?
Confirm current turnaround, required records and return arrangements with the laboratory before booking dependent patient appointments. Timing varies with the appliance and the work prescribed.
Reviewing a denture that may need attention?
Talk with Smart Smile about the appliance, proposed maintenance, required records and laboratory timing before the case is sent.
